Version 2.8.0

Added

  • Full Wi-Fi 6E/7 with 6 GHz band support.
(Windows 11 only because Windows 10 doesn’t support the 6 GHz band)

  • New Authentication & Encryption-Protocols.

  • New PHY-Standards (e.g. 802.11be for Wi-Fi 7)

  • Prompt if location is not allowed and Info how to fix it (only relevant for Windows 11 build 25976 or higher which now prompts you to allow to use your location, otherwise the app can’t work anymore because there is no permission to access the Wi-Fi API’s).

Bugfixes

  • Feedback option removed (because it was depreciated by Microsoft).

  • App-Icon fixed in Windows 10/11 Light-Theme.
(If it doesn’t update automatically, try to remove and add it again to the Taskbar)

Known issues

  • Recently, there seems to be an issue if you are plugged in via Ethernet, so maybe try to unplug the cable if you experience problems… I tried to fix it but I think this is a Windows 10/11 issue (because in the Developer Insider Preview it seems to work again).

Matt Hafner
Version 2.7.4

Improvements

  • You should not see channel 0 anymore in relation to a 6 GHz network (I added the necessary frequencies in the 6 GHz band to resolve the channel number from the center frequency… for full 6 GHz support see below).

  • New .com domain for all links related to this app which is more known as the previous .help domain, which a few found confusing (I finally got the domain “https://wifianalyzerapp.com“, which is now used for everything related to this app including the support e-mail).

Bugfixes

  • Various small fixes

Matt Hafner
Version 2.7.3

Bugfixes

  • Stability improvements

FREE vs PRO-Features

  • SSID & BSSID on graphs, network details and the network count per channel are now PRO-Features and here is my reasoning for this…

    • Most apps of this quality are not free!

    • I really want to keep this app FREE with no ads as a basic version for anyone who wants to see the state of the surrounding Wi-Fi interference and to find the best channel.

    • If you use this app just from time to time, then you can enable the PRO-Features for an hour every month but if you use this app more in depth so you need more than just basic features it will cost you a one time payment far less than a Netflix subscription and you have the PRO-Features forever.

    Hope you understand.

What’s next

  • Wi-Fi 6E support (6 GHz band) is planned together with Wi-Fi 7 which is set to arrive in 2024.

Matt Hafner
Version 2.7.2

Improvements

  • Helper links are more self explaining now (“wifianalyzer.help/…“) and all links are “https://”
-> I may plan to split up the “Tutorials” into a separate Website, therefore it needs to have its own domain, so “matthafner.com” will just be for my Filmmaking & Photography.

  • I’ve created a “YouTube playlist” with a few helpful videos (not just from me) which are linked in the “Learn” tab now

Bugfixes

  • A few fixes which could cause crashes

Matt Hafner
Version 2.6.0/2.6.1

Added

  • Finnish translation

Improvements

  • DFS, TPC, … channels are not recommended anymore because many don’t have Routers and Access-Points which supports it but these channels will still be displayed in the details of the rating pane.

  • Channel numbers on non-vacated networks are showing in the 5 GHz band now (if the width of the window is large enough).

Bugfixes

  • The 2.4 GHz band in the US will now correctly show and recommend channel 1-11.

  • It should show as connected now, if the Wi-Fi Router/Access-Point and the Wi-Fi adapter have different max. security protocols (like router WPA2/WPA3 and adapter only WPA2).

  • Network authentication/encryption may was not correct on the connected network page.

  • On the connected network page, the short encryption (e.g. WPA2) is correctly displayed after authentication now.

Known issues

  • If you run Windows 10 Version 1903 [May 2019 Update] or newer, it is possible that the colors of the graphs are randomized every time you start the app (this is not my intention but is caused by the 1903 SDK). This is not the case if I run the older version of the SDK (but then I loose WPA3 and WiFi 6 support).

Survey results regarding Link-Speed support on adapters and chipsets

Why two different App-Versions

Because Windows 10 1809 has a crucial bug which causes UI-Elements to not respond when used with a newer SDK (like 1903 for WPA3 support).

  • 2.6.1 for everybody who is on 1903 or newer will get the newer SDK

  • 2.6.0 for everybody else so the UI-Elements do not crash.

This is also the reason I delayed this update for a little bit to find a solution…

Matt Hafner
Version 2.5.0/2.5.1

Added

  • WPA3 support (requires Windows 10 Version 1903 [May 2019 Update] or newer)

  • 802.11ax/WiFi 6 support (requires Windows 10 Version 1903 [May 2019 Update] or newer)

  • Filtering of BSSID now possible (including the new +/-”[filter]” option) [PRO version only]

  • Filtering networks is now possible like in google search (e.g. -"[filter]" like -”network” to only show networks which do not include network, the same is possible with +"[filter]") [PRO version only]

  • "Learn-Tab" so tutorials and other info can be found more easily (also the links which can be found all over the app)

  • Icons & separators in Flyout-Menus (some require "Creators-Update" or newer)

  • Indian & Bahrain location (Wi-Fi frequencies)

Improvements

  • Dutch & Russian translation

  • "Wi-Fi adapter not found" message will appear less frequently so you have about 5-10 seconds to use the app

  • UI refinements (like some elements look more modern now)

  • New rating prompt (which lets you rate In-App now, instead of the store app)

  • Button for help with explanation when link-speed is not working

Bugfixes

  • Channel frequencies have been updated

  • Stability improvements

  • Other various bugfixes

Known issues

  • If you run Windows 10 Version 1903 [May 2019 Update] or newer, it is possible that the colors of the graphs are randomized every time you start the app (this is not my intention but is caused by the 1903 SDK). This is not the case if I run the older version of the SDK (but then I loose WPA3 and WiFi 6 support). I hope the next version of the SDK will fix this, which should come out around April/May.

Why two different App-Versions

Because Windows 10 1809 has a crucial bug which causes UI-Elements to not respond when used with a newer SDK (like 1903 for WPA3 support).

  • 2.5.1 for everybody who is on 1903 or newer will get the newer SDK

  • 2.5.0 for everybody else so the UI-Elements do not crash.

This is also the reason I delayed this update for a little bit to find a solution…

Matt Hafner
Version 2.4.1

Bugfixes

  • Connecting to networks should work again on the most recent Windows 10 version (Microsoft changed something in the API, which caused my implementation to crash).

  • I fixed one bug which could cause to show the app as "Disconnected".

  • Other stability improvements which could have caused crashes (including when the app starts or resumes).

  • Some improvements to the Czech translation.

Matt Hafner
Version 2.4.0

Added

  • Acrylic design (only available in Windows 10 version 16299.0 or higher)

  • French language

  • Czech language

Improvements

  • "UNKNOWN ERROR [BSSID]", which is a very rare error caused by Windows 10 and does not let me access the BSSID (MAC-Address) of the connected network, doesn't block the app anymore so it is at least usable now. When the error occurs it just uses only the SSID instead of the BSSID to find the correct connected network from the scan (with a notice to tell the user it could show the wrong network as connected because of this). You can find out more about it in this "Connecting to networks tutorial".

  • Beeper tone to be more accurate in the lower dBm values.

  • Live-Tile does now show the "not encrypted" symbol when the connection is not encrypted.

Bugfixes

  • The helper links have been changed and work correctly again.

  • Network-Encryption-Icon will update now when the encryption changed after the network was found.

Matt Hafner
Version 2.3.0

Added

  • Live-Tile support (only available in Windows 10 version 14393.0 or higher) [PRO version only]. Live-Tile explained tutorial

  • IPv6 support for private and public IP-Addresses.

  • New filter option: Hidden networks [PRO version only]

  • New tutorials and help for problems on my website (e.g. Live-Tile, connect to networks, upgrade to PRO).

Improvements

  • The last ten networks where you checked "Connect automatically" will now be remembered so you don't have to check the checkbox every time again (it will only be remembered if you hit the connect button). [PRO version only]

  • Updated icon for "Link-Speed" (only available in Windows 10 version 14393.0 or higher)

Bugfixes

  • The website links for the Changelog, FAQ & Tutorials are now changed to the real once (not sure why the subdomains stopped working, sorry for that). The shortened "http://wifianalyzer.help/... " domains are fixed already by moving it to another Domain-Provider.

  • A few words in the Dutch & English translation.

  • On smaller screens, the dashboard should now break the lines so you can read all the information.

  • Message-Box should now be shown if it was closed by the system before (until now an app restart was needed to fix this).

  • Taiwan is now shown as part of China (on the "Change region" page).

Matt Hafner
Version 2.2.0

Added

  • Polish translation
  • Wi-Fi adapter can now be chosen (replaces the primary/secondary switch).
  • Rotation-Lock orientation can now be chosen (e.g. Portrait, Landscape, ..), this is a PRO feature and only works if the rotation is been triggered by the sensors (maybe you have also to enable tablet mode on Windows 10).
  • CommandBar-Buttons have now the text besides the icon in case the width of the windows is wide enough. This only works with the "Anniversary Update" version 14393.x or newer.

Improvements

  • The hotkeys are now only be shown if you have a keyboard connected.

Bugfixes

  • UI is now better usable with Text-Scaling enabled.
  • The Num-Block numbers 1-3 are now also working as hotkeys (if the Num-Block is enabled of course).
  • Various other fixes including reliability.
Matt Hafner
Version 2.1.11

Added

  • Russian translation

Improvements

  • The connected network should be always shown correctly now (Yes, I finally found a solution to this problem, so no more SSID warning box from now on). It should just work now, including roaming through your repeater network.
  • I changed the default color theme from "Accent" to "Complementary" (only affects new installations or in case you reset the app). The new "Complementary" color is the darker blue color tone from Windows 10.
  • The Bandwidth in networks is been removed now because I can not detect it anyway and now you can see the more important information also on smaller screens.
  • A little tweak to the UI, so the "dBm" bars are a little bit longer on larger screens.

Bugfixes

  • Rating does not count networks with the same SSID on the same channel as your connected network anymore because these are most likely part of your repeater setup and should considered friendly.
  • New Mac-Address manufacturer service (because the old one is offline for some reason).
  • Color theme changes should now be applied to all elements incl. the panes (requires an app restart).
Matt Hafner
Version 2.1.0

Added

  • Tutorials which you'll find a link in the app ("About & help") or here.

  • Explanations of errors/problems via URL-Link which point to the correct part within my tutorials.

  • Spanish translation

  • Japanese translation

  • "No networks found" will be displayed below the spinning circle at startup/resuming in case there are no networks found.

Improvements

  • Performance (including faster app launch)

  • The speed meter/beeper could eventually respond faster but this heavily depends on the hardware too. (I decoupled it from the rest of the Dashboard so it updates as soon as I get the data now)

  • Secondary adapter should now work without the primary one being enabled (more details in my tutorial "Settings explained")

  • Updated FAQ

Bugfixes

  • The tooltip for "Send mail" now works again, in case you need the mail address.

  • The spinning circle disappears more accurately when the UI has been updated and will now appear again in case of some problem where the UI would not change otherwise (like mobile hotspot turned on).

  • The channel counter now works on the connected channel too.

  • Various little fixes to the UI.

Matt Hafner
Version 2.0.4

Bugfixes

  • When the rating pane is expanded, the Multiple SSID-Warning detected info* will be hidden to make sure the buttons on the rating pane can be reached to minimize it again. (Thanks for this bug report)

* Explanation why this is needed in my FAQ ("Why can it show me the wrong connected network?") in "About & help" or https://matthafner.com/wifi-analyzer/faq

Matt Hafner
Version 2.0.3

Added

  • Beeper (including the ability to change the volume in settings)
  • Filters can now be remembered between sessions (switch in filters)
  • Ability lock screen rotation to portrait mode.
  • The borders of the signal strength can now be changed (from 0 to -150 dBm, the standard remains -10 to -100)
  • Especially to improve performance, I give you the option to only calculate a certain amount of networks per channel per scan… this also can help to make the graph view more easy to read (in settings)
  • You can now delay a scan up to 5 seconds if you wish, this could also be good for performance (in settings)

Improvements

  • Hidden SSID looks now like this "••••••|HIDDEN" instead of "******|HIDDEN"
  • Portuguese translation
  • Attempt to improved color variety (I calculate them, so one specific network has always the same color on the same device, even if the app is restarted)
  • Explanation why the location is needed (a few did not know this)
  • You don't see stars anymore in case you are connected to the other band (this also confused a few of my users)

Bugfixes

  • If you use multiple SSID's on the same router and channel (like a guest network), it will not be calculated into the rating anymore (and will also not shown on the graphs)
  • I fixed the channel rating for 5 GHz, which did not work (sorry for this)
  • The Region-Pane does not block the refresh anymore

From the beginning, my goal was to make the free version completely usable which has all the necessary features, but if you want more convenience you can upgrade to PRO.

PRO-Features

  • No upgrade to PRO tab
  • Beeper for signal strength
  • Connect to networks
  • Use filters
  • Prevent screen timeout
  • Lock screen rotation
  • Change signal strength borders

Of course, I'll give you the ability to try out the PRO-Features. (Go to "Upgrade to PRO" for more information)

In the newest Insider Build for Fast-Ring on Desktop and Mobile (Version 14342), the link to open the mail app does not work (WiFi Analyzer will crash). This is not my fault, therefore I can do nothing to fix it... hopefully Microsoft will address this in the next Version.

Matt Hafner
Version 1.7.25

Added

  • Dutch & Turkish translation
  • Language selector (language you want to use has to be installed on the system, please check the FAQ for more information).
  • IP-Address & Subnet on the dashboard.
  • If the rating pane is minimized you now have the recommended channel marked in the graph (can be disabled in the View-Button).
  • Network count per channel added on the graph (disabled by default -> View-Button).
  • While looking on a band while connected to the other, you now have a little indicator for this (because the rating does not work in this case).

Improvements

  • App start improvements (less splash screen but more accurate spinning circle), so you see better what the app is currently doing.
  • You now see your current channel highlighted in the rating pane (this way it is easier to see how much it could be improved).
  • The error message for the bandwidth mentions now the FAQ (there is nothing I can do about this, I need Microsoft to add the API's to the platform first).
  • The manufacturer is enabled by default now and the setting is been removed (it will only download if your data-plan allows it -> presuming Microsofts implementation works correctly ;) ).
  • Attempt of better color distinction (I don't simply use a list with different colors, so the same network has always the same color)

Bugfixes

  • Frequency format will now be always 4 digits (5.200 GHz instead of 5.2 GHz).
  • You should not be able to connect to an OUT OF RANGE network anymore.
  • The Region-Pane is more responsive at the first app launch now (it also should not disappear automatically anymore).
  • When changing to the network tab, the view should refresh faster now (depends on the performance of your device ;) )
  • Better stability
Matt Hafner
Version 1.7.0

Added

  • Italian language
  • Bangla (Bengali) language

Improvements

  • FAQ-Link moved to "About" (Thanks for this feedback!)
  • At startup the app will check whether the Link-Speed will work on your device or adapter and will change it to the percentage in case it isn't because it confused some people.
Matt Hafner
Version 1.6.6

Added

  • Chinese Simplified language

Bugfixes

  • The Frequency (Band) below the graph was not in the correct regional format.
Matt Hafner
Version 1.6.2 (End of preview)

Important

  • For those of you who need more languages, I have good news too: The most requested Chinese Simplified & Italian will be among the next I will add in the coming weeks.

Added

  • Link-speed functionality (but it doesn't work on all devices or adapters, sadly it seems all the Lumias with Snapdragon S4 don't support it).
  • Russian region and updated channel list.
  • You now see the frequency (range) and bandwidth for the channels (but there are no API's to detect the channel bandwidth correctly, hopefully MS will add them at some point).

Improvements

  • Unused channel numbers always visible if there is enough space (otherwise they will be hidden)
  • Frequency button moved to the view button (eye) in analyze.
  • Network detail improvements

Bugfixes

  • Improved German translation
  • Triad & complementary colors slightly improved
